as a daughter that will never get this from my mother, I commend you for acknowledging this.💕

one of my teenage daughters said to me "I feel like you don't like me" and my response was "of course i LOVE you!” She said no, that's different. She felt loved but not liked. I made a huge pivot after that.

as a therapist, I am so impressed. what incredible, powerful work you’ve done. your son is lucky to have parents who are so committed to unlearning and repair.

As the child-in this scenario-I would've given anything for my mom to "get" this. Thank you!

My parents have absolutely no idea who I am as a person and are genuinely shocked when I don’t believe what they believe or think how they want me to. I’m 43

To fix or stop the break, PARENTS have to make three big mental shifts: stop believing their child owes them a relationship out of duty or gratitude, stop arguing over whether past harm was "fair" and simply accept how the child felt, and completely drop any urge to criticize or push back against the child's personal life choices and boundaries.

So THIS is what accountability looks like! What a concept.

Wow. Traumatic Invalidation puts a name to something that I think many of us have experienced but never knew how to define it. It isn’t just a one time…this person dismissed my feelings again…it’s a willful choice to never acknowledge them at all.

This was my childhood. My parents loved me but didn’t like me much. They were school teachers so there were always shining star pupils to compare me against. I’m on the spectrum (diagnosed recently at 63) and they just didn’t get me. I wonder how many neurodivergent kids this happens to?

No matter how accountable parents hold themselves..they will never be perfect and a matured child should understand that.

It is so refreshing to hear a parent be able to articulate this.

Wow. This is exactly how I feel in my relationship with my mom. I wish I could make her understand like you did with your son but she would just gaslight me instead. Proud of you for heating him and making changes ❤️

This is amazing. A lot of parents don't understand their children are still their children even when they're adults. Therefore parenting never ends.

I feel like this is something I did to my younger brother. And I feel terrible about it. We have never discussed it but I have apologized to him numerous times but we are still distant.

I'm so jealous of your son, for having a mom who was able to change. What you've done is amazing. I'm sure it's not easy.

I heard this extremely validating quote the other day, "People that can't communicate think that everything is a argument, and people who lack accountability & self-awareness think everything is an attack."

Sometimes parents focus more on providing physically for their child(ren) that they forget the other components of growth and development.
