But prosecutors later said the trip was part of a plan to lure him into a trap. Kathryn had been staying with her mother, Tracey Grist, and investigators said she, Tracey, and Kathryn’s brother Kevin Ellis had discussed a plan to k*ll Matthew. When Matthew arrived at the house, the lights were off. He walked inside. Within moments, Kevin Ellis sh*t him seven times. Ellis initially claimed Matthew had threatened him with a knife, but investigators said Matthew had arrived unarmed. Prosecutors later argued a knife had been placed in Matthew’s non-dominant hand afterward to make the scene appear like self-defense. Kathryn eventually admitted helping lure her husband to Utah and testified against members of her own family. She pleaded guilty to charges connected to Matthew’s dath. Kevin Ellis was later convicted of mrder, while Tracey Grist was convicted of m*rder, conspiracy and other charges for her role in the plot.
