Thanks for talking about this! I grew up in India and the amount of colorism I experienced heavily shaped my childhood. Random people would ask my mom why I was so dark when she is light and express their condolences right in front of me. The message was there is something wrong with my very skin and I was destined for misery/no one would marry me etc. Now people talk about having “glow” instead of being “fair” but it means the same thing.

We have every shade of color in our family. One of cousins - she and her husband and her son, her parents are all fair skinned and her 6 year old darker is significantly than everyone… and this little girl was asking our cousin why she’s so much darker than everyone else. I felt so bad hearing that because we are darker than our older sister and dad and remember being compared when we were kids. I told my cousin that she has to explain to her daughter that’s she’s beautiful. Hopefully the next generation doesn’t feel colorism the same way we did.

I guess personally I only experienced it once. I am the “light skin” in my family so always got “u r so pretty” UNTIL I got married to a guy who is even more light skinned than me. One of his friends goes “oh who cares about if she is darker than u at least u love her” 😂 like WTF. My sis in law also thinks she is “superior” cuz she is lighter skin. But over the years, I enjoy sun more and getting tanned and darker. No longer I am afraid of being in the sun as growing up we girls r taught to not get dark as if its a crime. There is SO much to this shitty side of our culture. Its embarrassing to even talk about openlyZ

You’re so right and it’s interesting to see Americans trying to decipher what Indians mean by “dark skinned” because all Indians are tanned. But skin color definitely impacts a lot of economics for no reason and that is unfair, and that’s actually true globally.

Well isn't privilege also winning beauty contests like Miss America and growing up with the feeling that you're attractive/beautiful? Even "fair skinned" people like me have no self esteem because I'm overweight and that's a death sentence in the western world. Plus being desi of course does not help

It’s also interesting that in many non white countries, you can take any white person ( the lowest of class) and they will get treated better than a dark skin person. Just imagine that!

Funny thing is other Indians never criticized or critiqued my skin color but def other races have! By that, I don’t just mean only negatively. Even saying they like my complexion is a red flag. Am I an animal? We don’t need to compliment someone’s color, we can’t help how we were born. It’s not something to compliment or criticize. It’s a moot point.
