15 "weird" ADHD tricks I use as a parent. That actually work. And that no one ever told me about. 1. Whisper instead of repeat. The ADHD brain tunes out familiar volume. A whisper requires effort — and effort creates attention. 2. Race them. "Shoes on before I count to 10." Novelty and competition produce dopamine. Dopamine produces compliance. 3. Let them eat standing up. A body not fighting stillness focuses better. 4. Give the job, not the instruction. "You're the shoe checker." Ownership produces follow-through that commands never do. 5. Use a song for transitions. Same song, same transition, every time. The brain prepares before a word is said. 6. Work alongside them. Sit next to them during homework. Presence regulates more than instruction. 7. Whisper the warning. "Two minutes" said quietly and close lands. Called across a room, it disappears. 8. Offer two bad options. "Hard bit or the really hard bit first?" Humour + autonomy = a brain that chose to start. 9. Let the fidget stay. The busy hand keeps the brain present. Take it away and the brain leaves. 10. Name the emotion — without fixing it. "You're really frustrated." Full stop. The named emotion often loses its grip. 11. Move before you demand focus. 10 minutes outside before homework produces a different brain. 12. One instruction at a time. Not "get ready" — "put your shoes on." One thing. Then the next. 13. Repair out loud. "I lost my patience and I'm sorry." A child who sees repair learns relationships survive hard moments. 14. Lower your voice when they get louder. Counter-intuitive. Effective. The ADHD brain is drawn to contrast. 15. Name the effort, not the result. "I noticed you kept trying when it was hard." Effort named becomes effort repeated. None of these appeared in any parenting book I read. All came from understanding the brain — not trying to change it. Which one are you trying first? 👇 The ADHD Child Boot Camp eBook has more like these. Comment "ADHD" and I'll send you the link 💛 . . . . . #ADHDparenting #ADHDkids #ADHDmom #ADHDdad #adhdtips
