This isn't a war between men and women. It's a tragedy involving human beings. You can have compassion for Lindsay without demonizing Patrick, and you can stand with Patrick without denying Lindsay's mental illness. Something I’ve been worried about with this case, especially when thinking about the future, is the potential impact it could have on custody battles in America. I’m concerned that men who are seeking full custody could potentially use a case like this to argue that a new mother is not fit to have custody because of the hormonal and emotional changes that can happen after giving birth. Even if a woman does not suffer from postpartum depression or any other postpartum condition, this case could potentially be used to argue that she is mentally or emotionally unstable simply because she has recently given birth. My concern is that this could ultimately be used against new mothers in future custody battles and create a situation where men could benefit from assumptions about postpartum hormones, rather than evidence that the mother is actually unfit or that the child is unsafe in her care.
