@barnardco: I often worry about the next generation of designers. These days there are so many new tools to go faster in your design software, and don’t get me wrong, I’m all for speeding up those laborious tasks. But sometimes these new tools, like ‘Remove Background’ don’t work like they’re supposed to. And you might need to revert to the old ways to get the result you need. Doing something as simple as removing a background was one of the ways I got better as a designer. It taught me to use the pen tool, which made me a master of manipulating vectors later in my career. I was discussing this yesterday with @Vanessa Rivera over on the Designerrrs™ Community, powered by @Adobe Express and we both came to the conclusion that designers should definitely strive to learn how to do tasks like background removal, photo retouching, grading and lighting using techniques that don’t use AI or a machine-learning model to help them. Not only will it give you a sense of accomplishment, but it could help you out in a pinch. Hit the link in my bio to watch my interview with Vanessa, plus more than 30 other legends of the design industry on my community. #community #graphicdesign #photoshop P.S. I used to consider myself a surgeon at masking and deep etching and I miss it daily.

I still cut out by hand on my product images. I find I still get a better result. For things that matter less such as social media work, then I just use the easy way.

I used to make a little money on the side masking out backgrounds. Really was a good way for young artists to get experience, pay rent, and find an opening into a company.

One day Adobe's servers went down. I'm 50 surrounded by 20+ designers who were severely handicapped that day. They couldn't work! 😂

It’s so good to use the erase background tool. But those who mastered the old ways are true legends.

it was great ‘turn brain off’ time, creativity takes a lot of brain power, so it was lovely to just not think for a bit

Can you please help me find an old lost technique for matching the colours of two different things? My mentor when I was a junior taught it to me then I went on mat leave at some point and my brain just dissolved it. I recall you would look at both the objects in different colour channels (r, g, b etc) and use the levels adjustment to adjust the object till it looked like the first object. idk if that makes sense. I'm devastated I've forgotten it 😭

Sure, AI can cut out objects for you, and admittedly I use them a lot in my work recently. But putting on a 2 hour playlist and getting down to every single strand of hair hits different.

I have been using Photoshop for around 30 years. Love the new time saving AI tools cause it helps my prices staying competitive. These days clients using Canva and ChatGPT instead of me is a real problem. Keeping prices reasonable helps stopping that nonsense. But if AI goes wrong, you still need all the old techniques.

I use the remove button but I'm still refining the result with some old tecnics. the new way help to gain time especially on social media post, but for printed ads it's better to mix it with old way to be precise

I spent five years doing high volume product photography, and still consider myself to be a master of the Photoshop pen tool. It’s a bastard to learn because it’s wildly unintuitive, but I still use it a lot to this day when I really want a super crisp mask.

I've hand cut out thousands of objects, hand drawn drop shadows, started on Photoshop 1. Yes learn to do it. I think every designer should have to build 1 full page car ád on deadline and work for a printshop at least 1 day

Absolutely 👍 and each designer and retoucher has their own personal “handwriting” to process the images and that brings something clever or artistic to the finished outcome

I wholeheartedly agree. These shortcuts are huge timesavers and "good enough" for average work. If you want to stand out, you've got to know how to push the limits, innovate, and produce a unique, creative vision. A talented, high-end designer understands the fundamentals of art/design and the mechanics of how to manipulate the software to produce their vision. They never rely on a stock template or quick actions to dictate a solution (unless it's a low-budget, quick piece). The needs of the user and the content come first! (I'm probably more old school than you -- started in '86 in magazine and newspaper production -- highly manual work. Evolved, taught PS 2.0-5.0 among other programs in the 90s, early 00s. I like to learn what the latest tricks are, how they can be used. I like your reels! 🤩)

Even with AI object selection getting better, still find myself going back to the roots of using channels, dodge and burn for getting intricate selections.
