![How do you survive America’s most notorious prison? After decades working in the prison service, Robert Hood had seen a lot. But when he arrived for his first day as warden of ADX Florence, America’s only dedicated federal “supermax” prison, he was shocked by what he found at the “Alcatraz of the Rockies”. “It’s beyond doing a life sentence,” said Hood, who was the warden between 2002 and 2005. “It’s worse than the death penalty.” Among the inmates are notorious criminals, from Zacarias Moussaoui, a 9/11 conspirator who studied at South Bank University in London and remains at ADX Florence 25 years after the attacks, to Richard Reid, the would-be “shoe bomber” from Bromley. It also holds Ramzi Yousef, the mastermind of the 1993 World Trade Center bombing, and Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán, the Mexican drug lord. A US Department of Justice official said: “The inmates transferred to ADX are among the most dangerous in the federal penitentiary system. Each has been convicted of murder and sentenced to death — and [President] Joe Biden’s reckless commutations cannot erase that fact.
