@nourishingapothecary: Do you actually know how to count your menstrual cycle? This is one of those things we assume everyone knows, but I get asked about it all the time. Day 1 of your menstrual cycle is the first day of proper menstrual bleeding. You then continue counting every day until the day before your next period begins. So if you have a 28 day cycle, Day 1 is the first day you bleed, and Day 28 is the final day before your next period starts. When your next period begins, you’re back to Day 1. And an important distinction: the length of your period is NOT the length of your menstrual cycle. If you bleed for 5 days, that doesn’t mean you have a 5 day cycle. Your cycle includes your menstrual phase, follicular phase, ovulation and luteal phase. What about spotting? If you have a small amount of spotting before your period begins, we generally don’t count that as Day 1. Day 1 is when proper menstrual flow begins. Tracking your cycle accurately can give us incredibly useful information about ovulation, cycle regularity, your luteal phase and overall reproductive health.
