🌱 Step 1: sowing. I sow my runner beans into pots to lengthen the growing season and to protect them from slugs. Runner beans get big quickly so I use a 9cm pot. Put 1-2 seeds into your pot about 1cm deep. Cover over and water. Put them somewhere warm to germinate. A soil temperature of around 20C is ideal for runner beans so a heated mat in the greenhouse or a sunny windowsill is ideal. Once they have germinated keep them protected from frosts. If you’ve sown 2 seeds to a pot and both germinate, either weed one out and compost it, or separate the two into two pots and grow on in pots until they reach the right size and the frosts are over. 🌱 Step 2: building your supports. To make a tent structure I push sticks into the ground in a circle shape, and tie them together at the top. To make an A frame structure I push 2 sticks into the ground at one of the bed and tie them together to make an A shape. I repeat at the other end of the bed and put a really long stick between the two. I then fill in with sticks at equal intervals. 🌱 Step 3: planting out. I wait until the last frosts are over, the plant is about 30cm tall with a few leaves and has a good root system. I dig a hole next to a stick on my support structure and add a trowel full of compost. Pop the plant in, firm it on and give it a water. I will encourage the plant to climb by winding it around the nearest stick. 🌱 Step 4: harvesting. I pick my beans when they are 20-30cm long. As they get larger they get tougher and more stringy. #selfsufficient #gyo #growyourown #growyourownfood #homestead #smallholding #garden #lovegardening #kitchengarden #veggarden #plants #igrewthis #ediblegarden #gardendesign #spreadsheets
