@naturalbuildingonline: 150 bales of straw. One very dusty job. 🌾 From walls to plasters to floors, straw has been a huge part of building our new dorm. But before it can be used, most of it needs to be chopped — and after many, many hours of chainsaw + weed whacker action, we’ve finally chopped the last bale! Definitely not the most glamorous part of natural building, but pretty satisfying to know it’s all going into the building. And even more satisfying to know… we’re done chopping straw! 🙌 Come stay in the new dorm next year! Not for nothin but you ever heard the story of the three little pigs and the big bad wolf. 💨 🐺

Using native building techniques is amazing. The mud and straw and the bamboo.

I always find this so fascinating. My daughter went to a Waldorf school in Colorado that is completely straw bale. And I never understood how it is that that doesn’t naturally break down inside the walls. I know keeping moisture out as important, but it can’t be possible to keep 100% of moisture out of that straw. And yet this big beautiful building is still standing decades later.
