Oliver Mtukudzi and Hugh Masekela a Brotherhood of African Sound | HUSAHWIRA The story of Oliver "Tuku" Mtukudzi and Hugh "Bra Hugh" Masekela is not just about music, it is about HUSAHWIRA. In Tuku's famous song he sings: "Zvamunoona husahwira hunokunda hukama"this friendship you see is stronger than blood relationship that lyric is exactly what he lived with Bra Hugh. It started in 1983 in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe. Tuku was already a professional musician on stage, and a man from the audience jumped up and started playing trumpet without being invited Tuku did not know who he was at first after the show they were formally introduced it was Hugh Masekela from that day a 36year brotherhood began. Tuku said about that first meeting the year was 1983 I was already a professional musician and had been following Hugh Masekela's work when I first him in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe, I admired and respected his talent"(met) Bra Hugh was in exile fighting apartheid through jazz. After he returned to South Africa in 1990 he and Tuku started collaborating on stage over and over they shared a deep love for African roots heritage, and liberation Tuku sang for the everyday struggles of Zimbabweans Bra Hugh blew his trumpet for freedom. Bra Hugh said "For over 30 years since I first discovered him he never stopped to amaze me" and "Oliver and I first met in Bulawayo in 1982... We have collaborated on stage several times since 1990 when I returned from exile". Their official songs together are their conversation • Tapera (2016) from Bra Hugh's last album No Borders recorded in Harare in just a couple hours, a guitar and trumpet talking about HIV/AIDS. • Todii (Live at One Night at Sixty) Tuku inviting his brother to celebrate his 60th birthday. And then God showed us how deep husahwira is. They left us on the EXACT same day Hugh Masekela died on January 23, 2018 and Oliver Mtukudzi died on January 23, 2019, exactly one year apart as the news said "Mtukudzi has died on the same date as a year ago from when his great friend South African jazz icon Hugh Masekela died". That is husahwira not bandmates brothers their friendship was stronger than distance, stronger than country, stronger than even death. That is why when you play "Husahwira" with this picture, people feel it.
