No the point of the riddle is to make you think that the previous $10 is still relevant but if they each paid nine dollars, technically that’s $27 and if the waiter took a two dollar tip then that’s two dollars more and 27-2 is 25 easy

27 comes from the total amount lost between the 3 friends (9 from each) (already counting the tip) since they each got 3 dollars back they didn’t lose that money added. In further explanation. As the question states, each friend payed $10 which 3X10=30, the money they each got back would be $1 so 30-1-1-1=27 the rest to equal the $25 total would be in the servers hand ($2) which makes 27-2=25 each person paid $9 9X3=27 ($2 of which is in the servers hand). Don’t look for the equation to equal 30, it should equal $27 (what the 3 people spent in total)

the way i see it is you each paid 10 dollars, and when the bill changed from 30 to 25 and he had to give a refund, you all didn’t pay 8 already, when you get a dollar back, somebody still paid 10 dollars while the other 2 paid 9, so there is no missing dollar, someone just paid 10

It’s a trick, it’s just that they paid 27 dollars, 25 for the nil and the 2 dollar tip, when he pays them back the equation is no longer a total of 30, it’s a total of 27
