Jerusalem alone contains enough historical and religious significance to occupy entire libraries, while Tel Aviv provides a completely different picture with its modern architecture, beaches, nightlife, technology sector, and remarkably energetic urban culture. The country also contains an absurd variety of landscapes, ranging from the Mediterranean coastline to the Negev Desert, the Galilee, the Golan Heights, the Sea of Galilee, and the Dead Sea, meaning that a country of relatively modest size somehow manages to provide beaches, mountains, deserts, forests, valleys, and ancient cities all within the same national borders. Israel’s technological achievements are equally impressive, particularly in fields such as agriculture, water management, medicine, cybersecurity, and engineering. Drip irrigation, desalination technologies, agricultural research, medical innovations, and countless technological developments have helped make Israel disproportionately influential in several fields despite its geographic size. Israeli culture is equally fascinating, combining Jewish traditions from numerous communities with Middle Eastern, Mediterranean, European, North African, and other influences to create a distinctly modern Israeli identity. Hebrew itself is remarkable as a modern language, having been revived as an everyday spoken language after centuries in which it was primarily used in religious and literary contexts. And then there is the food, which practically constitutes an independent argument for national greatness: hummus, falafel, shakshuka, pita, sabich, grilled meats, fresh salads, pastries, and countless other dishes make Israeli cuisine an extremely dangerous place for anyone attempting to maintain a reasonable appetite. Israel’s modern history is also remarkable for its resilience. The country has experienced wars, terrorism, regional instability, political crises, economic challenges, diplomatic disputes, and enormous international controversy, yet it has continued developing its economy, scientific institutions, infrastructure, military capabilities, and civil society. Its existence and security are understandably major concerns given the history of conflict in the region, and millions of Israeli civilians are simply ordinary people attempting to live their lives, raise families, work, study, travel, eat dinner, and complain about politics like people everywhere else. None of this makes Israel perfect, and criticism of Israeli governments or policies is entirely legitimate, but Israel itself is far too complex to be reduced to any single government, conflict, politician, or headline. It is a real country with a remarkably deep history, a vibrant culture, impressive technological capabilities, beautiful landscapes, and a population whose lives and security matter. The combination is frankly difficult to ignore.
