Rayo's number is defined using the language of first-order set theory rather than standard arithmetic or power towers. It is defined as the smallest number that is larger than any finite number that can be named by an expression in the language of set theory with a googol (10^{100}) symbols or fewer. Rayo's number is far larger than typical quantities encountered in physical science, such as the estimated number of elementary particles in the observable universe (roughly 10^{80}). It completely dwarfs a googolplex, Graham's number, Skewes's number, and even values generated by the \text{TREE} function like \text{TREE}(3). Its scale is so vast that it cannot be written out physically in decimal form, nor can its true magnitude be reached using traditional computable mathematical functions. Even if every single particle in the observable universe were converted into memory chips, there would not be enough matter to store its full representation. The concept was introduced during a competition at MIT where Elga wrote down a massive number using complex nested functions, but Rayo won by using formal logical language to create a rule that automatically outclasses any traditionally constructed number.
