@dweetle: No Apple Pay. No Google Pay. No NFC. Just your mobile phone. 📱🥤 Long before smartphones made tap-to-pay normal, Coca-Cola was experimenting with mobile payments through vending machines. The system, known as Dial-a-Coke, let customers call a number displayed on the machine, authorize the purchase through their phone, select their drink, and have the cost charged directly to their mobile bill. One Australian trial at Sydney Central Station reportedly sold 10,000 cans through mobile payments over 11 months. And the idea wasn’t even new then. Similar mobile-payment experiments had already been happening in Finland in the late 1990s. What looks incredibly basic today was actually an early glimpse of something that would eventually become completely normal: Using your phone as your wallet.
