@Moxxie:Why am I not a Communist? Because Communism asks people to sacrifice economic freedom today for an abundance that always seems to be coming tomorrow. Khrushchev promised communism within twenty years, but when that failed to materialise, the Brezhnev era USSR instead proclaimed “developed socialism,” effectively making the transitional stage permanent as it became clear that the state was not simply going to disappear. I personally believe markets, private property, profit and competition aren’t flaws as they provide the incentives and information an economy needs. Rather than concentrating economic power in the state through “public ownership,” I would rather create a property owning democracy where ordinary people can own homes, businesses and investments. The Soviet Union definitely did achieve impressive industrial, scientific and military successes, but after decades of planning it was still struggling with shortages, inefficient enterprises and heavily lacked consumer production. Communism kept promising a destination it never reached. I believe we should trust individuals to build prosperity for themselves. Feel free to debate me on this.
