A 22-year-old man is now the sole survivor of his family after a brutal spree killing allegedly committed by his father. On June 1, police were called to a home in Muscatine, Iowa where they found four family members dead: a mother and her three children. Police identified the suspect as the husband and father of the family, 52-year-old Ryan McFarland, who had already left the property. McFarland was found on a nearby bridge and took his own life after briefly talking to police. Police believe that McFarland had also taken the lives of two more of his children, one at another residence and another at work. The victims were 51-year-old Lesa McFarland, 32-year-old Dakota Whitlow, 29-year-old Austin Harris, 20-year-old Ryle McFarland, 16-year-old Mark McFarland, and 13-year-old Ryan McFarland Jr. McFarland had previous run-ins with the law. In 2011, he was charged with child endangerment resulting in death and neglect or abandonment after an infant died in his care. The records show he later entered a negotiated guilty plea to a reduced child endangerment charge. McFarland also had prior convictions for burglary and attempted armed robbery. On June 3 during a vigil, Ryan’s last remaining son Johnathan addressed the crowd saying that he would not only miss his mother, sister, and brothers, but his father as well.
