Trying to conceive? The day you ovulate may NOT be the most important day to have sex. One of the biggest misunderstandings I see around timing intercourse is the assumption that you need to wait until ovulation. In reality, some of your highest probability days for conception are usually before ovulation occurs. Here’s why. Once released, the egg has a relatively short window in which fertilisation can occur, generally around 12–24 hours. Sperm are very different. Under favourable conditions, sperm can survive within the female reproductive tract for several days. And this is where fertile cervical mucus becomes incredibly important. As oestrogen rises approaching ovulation, the cervix produces mucus that becomes progressively more hydrated, stretchy and sperm-friendly. This mucus isn’t just a sign that ovulation is approaching. It helps sperm survive, protects them from the vaginal environment and facilitates their movement through the cervix into the upper reproductive tract. Sperm also undergo a process called capacitation after entering the female reproductive tract, a series of physiological changes that ultimately allows a sperm to fertilise an egg. So ideally, you don’t want to begin thinking about intercourse only once you believe the egg has already been released. You want sperm present in the reproductive tract before ovulation occurs. This is also why understanding your fertile window matters more than obsessing over one perfect “ovulation day.” And if your cycles are irregular, predicting that window can become much more difficult. Rather than relying on an app prediction alone, I like looking at multiple pieces of information including cycle history, cervical mucus, LH testing and temperature patterns. Importantly, basal body temperature is better at helping confirm that ovulation has occurred than predicting it in real time. If you’ve been trying to conceive and aren’t confident about whether you’re ovulating, when you’re ovulating, or why your cycles are irregular, that’s something worth investigating properly. Our fertility naturopaths at Nourishing Apothecary work with individuals and couples across Australia via Zoom.
