I was 28 when I signed to Warner Chappell, 29 when I signed to EMI Records and 32 when I was dropped by both. At 39 I wrote the music for The Apprentice and at 45 I scored my first big drama series and my first movie. I was 52 when I won an RTS and 59 when I won a BAFTA. Last year I got my bus pass but I’m still writing every day and am endlessly excited by the new music I find on here. Undoubtedly I’ve been lucky, but I’m a proud state school kid who didn’t get into uni. I just blustered my way through and continue to do so! There’s been plenty of lows and self doubt, but somehow I just kept going because I really didn’t have a choice. Great post, as always, Stevie.

This hit pretty hard, I’m 30 working towards a career in music. I’m 1 song in about to be 2 songs in and I’ve played it a bit too safe by working on a full time job in tech that has slowed me down because the urgency has been lower to make money and post better content, it hit me hard just now reflecting because of this video and if I didn’t play it as safe I’d probably be further along than I am. I need to be more urgent, be writing, recording, posting better stuff. Don’t get me wrong, I post everyday and post easy quick content and seen some success through it but I can do better. I wish I had started my solo journey sooner instead of being in groups with other people who didn’t have the same push as I did to do something with music. Instead it was a hobby to others and it’s my life’s ambition for me but being only the guitar player I felt like I couldn’t be the face of the group on social media and put 2 years to the side to do this. Now I’m going solo and have a lot of catching up to do while working a job I really just don’t like. This video gave me the kick in the ass that I’ve needed to step up and do better everyday even if it’s 0.1%. Thank you!

I’m 38. Fortunately for me I was not very ambitious. So I’m not overly disappointed in where I have ended up

Making a living from music is massive achievement! After stopping writing in my 30s, I’m now up at 6 every morning working on music before work, who knows if it’ll go anywhere but making that change has fckn saved my life.

Good insight. I’ve just left my decently paid job at 33 to go it alone. It’s not easy. I have a 9 month old baby (congrats btw) and it was a hard decision to make, but the idea of looking back in regret is scarier. Thanks for this 🫡

The music business is a fuck up. I would never give up a good job to chase dreams in that industry. It is a casino with really low odds. I found a job I enjoy that makes good money and on my leisure time pursue my passions. Let’s face it - for 99 percent of humanity there is no reasonable chance to ever combine passion with making money. It is about survival. To really allow is to pursue our passions we must change this money system from survival

You’re doing it right. Most older people when interviewed will say they regret the things they didn’t do more than their screw ups.
