In this video, I'll share one of the cringiest things I've seen a patient do with their Foley catheter. Foley catheters are used to drain urine in patients. They are inserted in the pee hole, up the urethra, and they sit in the bladder. In order to keep them in the bladder, there is a balloon the nurse must inflate. One day, I walked into a patient's room and noticed their sheets were bloody. I asked the patient, "What happened?" The patient replied, "I didn't need that anymore." They were pointing to the Foley catheter. The patient had pulled it out, with the balloon FULLY inflated, out of the bladder, down the urethra, and out of their pee hole. I can't imagine what that must have felt like! Yikes! If you ever have a Foley catheter inserted, and you feel the urge to remove it, be sure to ask your nurse to assist you with that. They must deflate the balloon prior to removal.
