(Mathias/Michael) Nwafor Ugochukwu, who was affectionately known as “Ugo Foam” or “Abilikete of Umunze.” He was a well-respected businessman and industrialist hailing from Umunze in Anambra State, Nigeria. Different sources might spell his first names a bit differently, so I’ll just point that out instead of sticking to one version. Chief Ugochukwu really made a name for himself as an entrepreneur in the aftermath of the Nigerian Civil War. In the early 1970s, he founded Ugo Foam and Ugo Chemical Industries right in Umunze. His factory became quite famous for producing foam mattresses and pillows, which were sold in markets all over Nigeria. His business ventures positioned him as one of the key indigenous industrialists in southeastern Nigeria. In discussions about Nigerian family businesses, M. N. Ugochukwu of Ugo Foam is often mentioned alongside other notable entrepreneurs like Louis Odumegwu Ojukwu. He was recognized as a traditional ruler of Umunze and played a significant role in securing land for the permanent site of the Federal College of Education in Umunze. Ugochukwu served as the treasurer for the National Party of Nigeria (NPN) and was involved in the political landscape that led to Alex Ekwueme becoming Shehu Shagari's running mate in 1979.
