@hudpost: After 80 years in Hoboken, Stan’s Sport Center is closing its storefront, though the family business itself will continue. Stan’s was founded in 1946 by two brothers-in-law and World War II veterans, Pete Stanich and Ray Cerrito, who wanted to open a hobby and sporting goods shop. The name came from the first four letters of Stanich’s last name. It began selling model airplanes alongside basketballs and basic athletic gear before expanding into sports equipment and local team apparel. From its home at 528 Washington Street, Stan’s grew into a Hoboken institution, known for varsity jackets, customizing local school uniforms, and stocking official Hoboken gear. Owner Dan DeCongelio’s connection to the store spans more than 50 years. He started there in 1973 as a Hoboken High School student who came in after school to hang around. “I used to come up after school every day and just hang out, pick up a baseball glove or a bat,” DeCongelio said. “I guess they got tired of me just coming up to hang out, so they offered me a job.” He bought the business in 1996.
