Why stretching your proximal hamstring tendon might be making it worse. If you have proximal hamstring tendinopathy, one of the most common symptoms is a feeling of tightness high up in the hamstring. Naturally, this makes you want to stretch it. But stretching isn’t always the answer. The proximal hamstring tendon doesn’t particularly like being compressed, and stretching the hamstring can increase the compression of the tendon against the structures underneath it. This is also why activities such as sitting on a hard surface can be uncomfortable when you have proximal hamstring tendinopathy. So one of the first things we often recommend is reducing the things that are irritating the tendon, and that may include temporarily stopping aggressive hamstring stretching. That doesn’t mean you should avoid movement altogether. Once the tendon is less irritable, the focus should be on gradually rebuilding its capacity through appropriate strengthening and loading. So if your hamstring constantly feels tight, stretching it more might not be the answer.
