The root of its genus name, vampyro, was inspired by the black pigment that makes it blend into the darkness of the deep pelagic waters where it lives. ⁠Scientists don’t know how it makes this pigment, but there is some evidence that it absorbs blue light, a common color of deep-sea bioluminescence. ⁠ ⁠ How small is small? These itty-bitty beauties can grow up to 14 millimeters (just about half an inch).
