It’s a rehashing of the “swarthy lover” trope from Victorian era “bodice ripper romance” novels. The MMC comes from a “savage” culture, but his exact race is intentionally left ambiguous and HE is the exception to his culture - fighting against his own base instincts for violence and wild, crazy sexual impulses as a paragon who happens to be more refined than his skin would suggest. But it wouldn’t be proper for a high class (white) lady to fall for such a dastardly individual, it’d be taboo! That’s the appeal, though, and I find it disgusting.

I did a video on this called Tall, Dark and Ambiguous and it really is a modern version of the “dark features” that existed in 1800s literature and following that had dark haired and dark eyed white men being seen as more lustful and in some cases exotic.

white writers create these men to be “exotic” without needing to answer to fetishism or stereotypes. the white FMC is usually blonde, smaller, delicate, feminine and “quirky”. the brown LI is always sarcastic, aggressive, and animalistic. it’s the idea of a “savage” man obsessing over The Perfect White Woman. and if they never specify what’s he coded to be, then it’s “not racist”.

I do get some of it but I understand why the cultural heritage isn’t as big of a focus because they live in a fantasy world, and I would personally never just assume the character has a specific culture because of their race, at least outside USA, culture is not the same as race, those are two completely different things, race is biological and ancestry and culture is your current lived experiences and reality combined with your family’s lived experiences and reality.

i think it could be partially a little more difficult to say explicitly what race someone is in a fantasy world setting where there are no counties or continents in our world, so explicitly stating the darker skinned character are of a specific ethnicity just wouldn’t make any sense

Honestly, I don't think it has anything to do with race or at least race in the way most people think. In western culture, tan skin is associated with hard work, "his body being honed by the elements." The entire concept of a "shadow daddy" is that he's supposed to represent "darkness", mystery. The opposite of what's expected of her to love. When writers come back later and say "he's POC." It does feel like passive representation because they weren't trying to write a POC lead, they were writing a shadow daddy
