The Deer Hunter, Raging Bull, which won him Best Actor in 1981 and where he put on sixty pounds for the last act because he refused to fake it. Then Once Upon a Time in America, Goodfellas, Cape Fear, Casino, Heat. Then he turned round and did Meet the Parents and was funnier than anyone expected. The Irishman and Killers of the Flower Moon since. He barely says anything about the work. Famously bad in interviews, long pauses, obviously would rather be elsewhere. All of it goes into the film instead. The style is New York and nothing else. Dark coats, dark suits, scarf, a cap, tinted glasses. Nothing bright, nothing new-looking.
