It is history carried in melody, memory passed from generation to generation, and a living expression of Trinidad and Tobago’s multicultural identity. Parang History Month gives us an opportunity to pause and remember the people, communities, traditions and stories that shaped this uniquely Trinbagonian art form — from its Venezuelan roots and Spanish language traditions to the many generations of Trinbagonians who made parang their own. It is a time to honour the parranderos, musicians, singers, elders, teachers, cultural advocates and communities who kept the tradition alive, often long before there were stages, competitions, recordings or recognition. But remembering history is not simply about looking backwards. Heritage comes with responsibility. If we want parang to remain alive, we must learn its history, protect its traditions, document its stories, teach our children and create space for the next generation to carry it forward. Because when we lose the stories behind the music, we lose part of ourselves. This Parang History Month, let us remember, research, celebrate and preserve. 🇹🇹❤️🎶 Parang is our history.
