The prosecutor questioning an old Crips gang member in the Tupac Shakur murder trial asked him about his work as a law enforcement informant at the end of the 17-minute exam on Thursday. Devonta "Dirt Roc" Lee acknowledged he started working for the Drug Enforcement Administration in 2006 and received five payments from the High-Intensity Drug Trafficking Area (HIDTA) program. "And that was for $2,000, $500, $1,000, $1,300, $500, for a total of $5,300. Is that fair?" asked Binu Palal, a deputy district attorney in Clark County, Nevada, questioned him in direct-exam (Thursday, August 20, day 4). "That's probably fair to say. I don't know exactly," Lee said. "You don't remember it, but if I told you that you wouldn't disagree with me?" Palal asked. "No, not at all," Lee answered. Palal apparently asked the questions to get ahead of cross-examination that could try to question Lee's credibility, but it may not have been needed: Davis' lawyer didn't ask Lee much about it. "Mr. Lee, your street moniker is Dirt Rock?" asked attorney Michael Sanft. "Correct," Lee said. "Okay. And how did you come with that moniker? How did that happen?" Sanft asked. "It was given to me," Lee said. Sanft confirmed Lee was working with a task force investigating Davis as a drug dealer. Lee was on the witness stand for 31 minutes. The main point of his testimony was to tell the jury about the melee at the Lakewood Mall between Crips and Bloods members weeks before Shakur was shot in Las Vegas.
