I used to work at a used bookstore, and we would regularly destroy books we couldn’t sell. Old books, damaged books, books shipped to us in error, etc. I get that people hate AI companies, but if some company wants to buy up all that paper waste and scan it before doing the same thing libraries and bookstores are going to do anyway, what’s the issue, here?

Completely ignoring the fact that they were ordered by a judge to do it this way because copywrite law is hot garbage. After OpenAI was sued for piracy, a judge told these companies to do it properly they have to buy the books, scan them, and then destroy them or otherwise they could be sued for infringement. As far as I'm concerned, copywrite law is the problem. Storytelling is the oldest art in human history and we've locked it behind a curated paywall. Knowledge should be free, information should be free, content should be free.
