It also doesn’t HAVE to come from a side. Sometimes fraternal twins just happen, especially in people who conceive in their 30s. Sometimes the body just offloads two eggs.

I think there’s a distinction getting lost here. Yes, the woman is the one who has to release two eggs for fraternal twins to occur, so her husband did not cause her to release two eggs in that pregnancy. But that does NOT mean the genetic predisposition for hyperovulation can only come from the mother’s side. She could have inherited that predisposition from her father, who could have inherited it from his mother. And if she has a daughter, that daughter could potentially inherit relevant genetic variants from either parent. Men can carry and pass along a genetic variant even if they can’t physically express the trait themselves. So “who releases the eggs” and “where the genetic predisposition came from” are two different things.

I’ll be honest, I never understood the “skip a Generation” concept until someone’s comment here. My aunt has fraternal twins but NO ONE else in the family does so that leads me to believe it was passed from her father and not my grandma, her mother.

OMG people always ask this. “Are there twins in the family?” And I say my husbands side has twins, but that has nothing to do with us and they look at me like I have ten heads. not genetic? seems like too much of a coincidence in that family lineage. maybe we just don't know what's responsible for identical twins yet. could be some niche gene we haven't fully studied yet

It's honestly not a stupid question cuz as you said, you didnt know this fact before becoming pregnant with fraternal twins. Reframe it as a fun fact and educate them! I did know this and I love sharing with people because they usually dont know.
