Francis George Momoh Bockarie :
*The Danger of Immaturity in Leadership*
Leadership is not measured by the position someone holds, the title attached to their name, or the number of people who surround them. True leadership is measured by maturity, wisdom, responsibility, and the ability to put the interests of others above personal pride.
There was once a leader who had been given an important position. Instead of using the opportunity to serve, he became obsessed with proving that he was powerful. Whenever something went well, he took the credit. Whenever something went wrong, he blamed someone else. He reacted to criticism with anger, turned every disagreement into a personal battle, and believed that everyone who questioned him was his enemy.
His greatest weakness was not a lack of intelligence—it was a lack of maturity.
He would make decisions based on emotions rather than facts. He would speak before thinking and make promises before considering whether he could fulfill them. Sometimes, he would create unnecessary conflicts simply because he wanted people to recognize his authority.
A wiser person once told him, “A position can give you authority, but only maturity can make people respect you.”
The leader initially ignored the advice. But over time, people began losing confidence in him. His colleagues stopped bringing him honest information because they feared his reactions. His supporters became afraid to correct him. Eventually, he discovered that being surrounded by people who always agreed with him did not make him a strong leader—it made him an isolated one.
The lesson became clear: immature leadership creates fear, division, confusion, and resentment, while mature leadership creates trust, stability, and unity.
A mature leader understands that not every disagreement is an attack. Not every criticism is hatred. Not every correction is disrespect. Sometimes, the people who challenge you honestly are the very people helping you become better.
Leadership is also about knowing when to speak and when to remain silent, when to act and when to wait, and when to defend your position and when to admit that you were wrong.
