when my Father knew his time was coming, he told both me and the Doctor. dementia was coming in he was 93 and at that point it was just him and I. Mom and my brothers had passed and i was responsible for their arrangements. My Dad was 'quirky' is how we'd explaine him but i wonder if there was more to that. I was the youngest in a family of 6 and as life went on 'I' became 'man of the house', my father seemed to just expect it. so when Mom died he looked at me and said 'I cant', so then 'i did'. to this family over the years hospitals became almost a backdrop, a scene painted on the wall. i learned so much that often i was mistaken for someone in the medical field. there are 2 times that i can not forget, when my father had prostate surgery, he was saying goodbye to me as they took him and he wouldnt let my hand go, all the nurses and Doctors watched and cried as i told him id be waiting. i didnt know it until he let go and i turned to them, all wiping their tears. one nurse said that was the hardest goodbye ive ever seen. later as he was dying he told the Doctor he was ready, and so because of the dementia it was up to me, i told them NO hes your patient, its only just beginning, let him tell you. the Dr talked to him and Dad turned and told me he was tired and he was ready i told him say it in english so the Dr knows and the Dr held his hand and Dad told him a couple things, but then he told him he was ready. ive never seen a Dr weep infront of a patient like that before. he approached me and i told him 'you learned something today, dementia has stages and they should not be set aside when the diagnosis is made, it comes and goes. dont ever count them out'. he gave me a hug and then they began the sedation to 'make him comfortable'. Dad didnt want to go, he held on as long as he could. he didnt want to leave me alone. on Sept 5th 2025 i told him it was ok, he neednt worry my time had come as his was ending. he motioned 'ok' and he was gone. i see the date and its about to be a year. it hurts but im proud to have been their son.
