Tips are never mandatory, but always tip service workers, including housekeeping. Show appreciation for their service to you.

I don’t like to be waited on. I don’t want people carrying my bags. It’s not about the tip because I tip very well. Often, if we’ve had a long drive, I feel rushed when the bellmen approach. They start grabbing things from our vehicle without asking. I know they mean well but I’m an introvert & it feels invasive. Just give me a minute to process! I also don’t want housekeeping during my visit. I request extra towels & they can clean after checkout.

As someone who works in this industry, being nice (and occasionally tipping/gifting) the employee who checks you into your room will go very far in the room/accommodations you get at the hotel. Sometimes availability is literally so tight we can’t upgrade you even if you tipped $100, so don’t take it as a guarantee.

Apparently enough people abscond with robes and pillows, because even top tier hotels put in writing either how much a purchase will cost you, or to contact guest services to inquire about purchasing.
