@drewxdeficit: Lanterns is great, but it is an adaptation, meaning it gets to be its own thing #comics #comicbooks #dccomics #lanterns #greenlantern

And let’s be so for real. The viewers upset about John Stewart’s back story aren’t reading comics from the 60s or 70s. They’re thinking about the Justice League cartoon from the 2000s

Not being comic accurate is not a valid critique. You can say it disappointed you personally because it wasn't what you wantes but you can't argue that its bad because it's not accurate

People reading a comic and thinking it needs an adaptation just need to stop reading comics. You don’t actually enjoy a story if you think it needs to be changed to a different medium than the one it was written for.

I've also seen SO much revisionism saying 2011's Ryan Reynolds Green Lantern was actually the best adaptation imaginable and that everyone had always thought and said so. like, we get it, "nerds" always hate New Thing™, and always loved Old Thing™. I've been in the Pokemon and Zelda fan spaces since I could read, you're not gonna fool me with that. 😭😭😭

That show would be so boring if they went page for page the comics. They wouldn’t even be able to enjoy the element of surprise the show is serving them weekly. As a comic book fan who loves these characters, I want to see new stories, not a 1:1 adaptation of something i’ve already seen. Show me a different dimension. Step outside the box. Comic book fan act like they have a higher understanding of the characters than everyone else, but really it just exposes how closed minded they are about things that’s not within the confines of what they expect it to be.

I think the annoyance for me doesn’t come from an adaptation being different (even though I am a purist and know that’s a me thing that I don’t take as a con on the show), it comes from the fact that many people who don’t read comics will now be basing their entire knowledge of the characters on the adaptation. I had to deal with this for years and man of steel where I’ve had people tell me he’s supposed to be edgy, dark etc. and that’s my major annoyance with it. It’s not a show problem for me as much as I know this will be the baseline for lots of new adaptation stuff of green lantern and inevitably force a bit of brand synergy in the comics of this version, which in a way changed the main story because comic storylines are just one big story lol hope this makes sense

I think this is a well made point, however I think the people worry that the popularity of an any adaptation will result in changing the characters on the page. Look no further than Tony stark. He’s now for better or worse RDJ on the page. That said, Lanterns is a phenomenal show.

Films/TV shows aren’t the main story, but we get so many less of them, it makes them comparatively higher stakes. As an example, I love Joe Casey’s adventures of Superman run, where he famously goes 12 issues without throwing a punch. But it’s one of four ongoing titles coming out every month; it’s one thing for Casey to experiment like that and another for Brian Singer to do the same thing in the first Superman movie in 15+ years.

Okay so can we talk about the fact that people will cry "Comic Book accuracy" about things like the MCU Spider-Man "Having lines" but then praise the TASM suits, or the fact that they'll whine about a DC movie or show like Lanterns not being "Comic accurate" but then absolutely PRAISE a movie like BvS where like most Comic book movies just cherry picks things from the comics and turns that into a story. Like I dont think movies like Batman Begins, Sin City, or Scott Pilgrim get enough credit to being very faithful adaptations (to an 80% degree) of the source material

I have thought like this before. It usually stems from casuals thinking the same but only bc they don’t know what a comic books is. That’s why you get people who think man of steel is the best Superman movie. B/c they don’t know how far its trays from the source material. They dont know it’s a bad adaptation, bc they dont know that it is one at all.

I find it odd how the moment it comes to talking about comics the definition of the word "adaptation" seems to change. when it comes to adapting a book the quality of the adaptation is typically in how well they translate it from one medium to the other and accuracy to the original. its okay that we get something like Romeo+Juliet because we have hundreds of textually accurate adaptations of Romeo & Juliet, but theres simply nothing even close to that for comics(outside of animation but unfortunately most people dont watch those and this is about trying to make comics known to general audiences).

As someone who’s read Green Lantern comics since he could read. This was awesome seeing a new take on the characters and a story that isn’t set in space. Hal and John are the protectors of Sector 2814, and Earth is the most active part of that sector yet for some reason most Green Lantern stories nowadays are in space. I liked this more grounded thing. I will say the newest episode annoyed me because they literally had all the Green Lantern action off screen

Exactly! whatever adaptation is happening, it’s just an interpretation from that creator to fit their medium in my mind. The only medium that can tell the story that the comic does is the comic and if I want the “original story” I’m just gonna go read it

I always want adaptations of comics to make their own changes and alter the plot slightly because if its as direct as something like invincible, I feel like it invalidates the comics for some people, they already know what happens and dont need to read the comic anymore

I’m not thrilled that they continue to push this “you must be fearless” idea of being worthy of the ring but hey maybe part of the shows plot will be the realization that being worthy of the ring is the ability to overcome fear

I’m radical enough that I feel like other comic runs that’s NOT written by the original creative team of a character is also an adaptation and not something we have to take so seriously, as well.

I completely agree. But there is an issue with in particular Marvel using the adaptation to alter the source material e.g. ms Marvel, Spider-Man, Nick Fury. Not all the changes are bad but they can have ramifications on the comics

I just treat the tv shows/movies like they’re elseworld stories (which they kind of are). I’m not expecting mainline accuracy from an elseworld story, just something interesting using some ideas from the mainline.

Some comics are adaptations as well. There’s the main continuity then there are elseworld stories that take place outside that continuity. Those stories will create different versions of existing characters, the show is doing the same thing except it’s part of its own continuity, the DCU.

You see the same thing with book and video game adaptations. Even the *slightest* change from the source material and people flip out. Why on Earth would you want something that is exactly the same as the original material? That's boring. If you want beat for beat the same thing, then go to the original source. Canon is for religion and has no business being in fiction. Full stop. If you want dogma, try a church.

A lot of people view comics as a lesser than medium than things like movies and shows that’s why they get so upset at things like this
