The Greeks had a word for this exact failure: hubris, the arrogant assumption that one's own form is the standard against which all deviation must be judged and punished. Achilles was a better person, right up until his ego couldn't survive being outdone. The Athenians championed democracy and rationality, then voted to execute Socrates for the crime of being philosophically inconvenient. The posture of virtue and the instinct toward hostility at difference have always coexisted in the same body. Even deeper, this maps directly onto what Aristotle called akrasia, weakness of will, the condition where you know exactly what the right action is and still do the opposite when tested. The Stoics built an entire philosophical tradition around the gap between stated values and instinctive behavior, because that gap was apparently already a public epidemic in 300 BCE.
