People say these strategies don't work only because so many of them have not been fully trained to use them. Just knowing bits and pieces of things ends up creating a warped image of programs. It appears that they "don't work" because only parts of them are being implemented and mixed together with others instead of mastering one at a time (quality vs. quantity).

I developed the “get along table” for students who are off task or struggling. I like homogenous grouping but if there’s two or three kids that are distracting in the whole group, I’ll put them at their own table. Then I do my own super positive proactive behavior with the kids while most of the class is happy to work by itself. After a while, they can go back and sit with her friends and I’ll allow it, as long as their behavior is on point.

That just sounds like sound strategies for off-task behavior (not working, wandering around, being on the wrong website, etc). I feel like that’s the main challenge you are referring to in your videos, but some teachers are dealing with much more severe behaviors— calling other students vile names, for example. Off task behavior I agree should be handled the ways you are describing, but other students don’t feel safe when the more extreme behaviors are handled the same way.

sometimes just being "in proximity" of the student off task, causing a disruption etc gets a desired result. OFten a little tap on the desk without drawing attention to the student gets them refocused.

I’m assuming you teach in Kentucky or something like that and it’s an Avid class. Consequences are necessary, we use CKH in my school and I like some of the ideas but realistically, those percentages are just BS

Another one you might like, Eric. I borrowed this from Nordstrom’s where they have a one Rule employee manual concept. When you give kids a lot of rules, they’re just gonna look for new rules to break. So my one rule sounds like this: do the right thing at the right time. This way if they’re doing something that they’re not supposed to be doing, I will say: hey, is that what you’re supposed to be doing and the kids now have a little bit of executive function in the conversation instead of just being beaten down by “Rule 14” or whatever. And then I teach the kids that if they’re not sure, all they have to do is ask first. About 60% of the time when they ask if they can do something I say yes because usually it’s the right time to do it. And if I say no, I let him know that maybe it will be a good time in a while. It’s just not now. This totally changed the way my classroom felt in terms of discipline.

Before I begin each lesson (2nd grade) I make sure I give clear expectations on behavior and staying on task. I let them know if they choose to do different and disrupt the class, they are choosing to miss a privilege such as Friday free time, etc. I make it clear that they are responsible for the consequences, not me. Is this foolproof? No, but it does work more than it doesn’t.
