@wcax: A local boat captain says he has located thousands of tires on the bottom of Lake Champlain that pose a potential hazard to navigation. “The first you think of is that, this is not right,” said Gary Lefebvre, speaking of the discovery he made on his research boat’s sonar in early August - thousands of tires strung together, lining the bottom of Cumberland Bay. “It looked like an old breakwater or wave attenuator that probably... some sort of transport gone wrong and somebody lost it,” Lefebvre said. He said it’s sitting in a nationally historic part of the lake, between Crab Island and the Plattsburgh Boat Basin, spanning at least one football field. “It looked to be over 100 yards long, possibly even 200 yards.” Worried about what could happen if the tires surfaced, Lefebvre said he contacted the Coast Guard. “These tires were to break loose and end up on a public beach or break loose and end up floating and hitting a boat at high speed -- that’s the main concern with it,” he said.
