If you want to try companion planting, grow nasturtiums. They are easy to grow and make great companions for many different crops. 🌱 Nasturtiums can be used as sacrificial plants, tempting pests away from your crops. A classic example is tempting caterpillars away from brassicas, and aphids away from beans. 🌱 Nasturtiums also attract pollinators, making them excellent companions for fruit & veg which are pollinated by insects. 🌱 Nasturtiums attract predators, especially hoverflies and ladybirds who help to control aphid populations. 🌱 They will trail all over acting as ground cover to help with moisture retention. 🌱 Every part of the nasturtium is edible - the leaves, flowers and seeds. 🌱 You can sow nasturtiums direct from May; and you can sow some now under cover. Sow nasturtium seeds 1.5cm deep, 2 to a pot. Water them in and put them in a greenhouse or in the house to germinate. Plant out after the last frosts. When it comes to planting them in the garden, I tend to dot nasturtiums all over the garden because they bring so many different benefits to the garden. Particular pairings you might want to try: 🌻 Plant some near your brassicas, and allow them to trail through, protecting them from caterpillars and keeping the soil moist. 🌻 Beans to protect from aphids 🌻 Squash, cucumbers and courgettes 🌻 Tomatoes, aubergines and peppers Nasturtiums are hungry plants, so space each plant at least 30cm from your crops and trail them back through. There’s two 2 different types of nasturtium: 🌱 Tropaeolum majus: classic, rampant trailing variety, will climb 🌱 Tropaeolum minus: smaller variety which grows well in containers, bushy habit This year I’m growing Empress of India (Majus), Ladybird Rose (Minus) and Milkmaid (Minus) #nasturtium #companionplanting #selfsufficient #gyo #growyourown #growyourownfood #homestead #smallholding #garden #lovegardening #kitchengarden
