@bloodfirejeff: I finished part one of Kingdom of Ash by Sarah J. Maas and as requested, you wanted a two-part review for this last Throne of Glass book, so here is part one! #BookTok #bookreview #books #reading
I agree with a lot of this. I think she can do high stakes fast paced sections really well, Aelin escaping Maeve, Elide saving Lorcan. When they’re literally running for their lives it sings for me, has me on the edge of my seat.
I do find her character work to be wildly sporadic but my favourite series of all time is Realm of the Elderlings and when talking character work everyone seems a bit sh1t when compared to Robin Hobb.
SJM does have some really interesting characters who I just adore reading about (Manon, Dorian, Yrene, Lorcan and Elide) but I feel pretty ambivalent towards the rest.
When she hits the emotional impact she really hits it (Dorian when Sorscha 🗡️😵, the 13 and “Live Manon”, Aelins “take it off take it off” and the whole Aelin and Fenrys blinking).

It’s a good book in between all the filler. Like dear god, can someone call an editor? 😭 HOW LONG WILL AEDION HOLD THE LINE??

Not good for people with anxiety, I’ll say.

Idk, if anyone has mentioned this.. but she was an actual teenager writing this series. So you have to appreciate where she was in life when she wrote it. Lmao, and for me.. it wasn’t long ENOUGH! To each their own I guess

SJM’s writing is odd to me because it is both very engaging and entirely too slow and makes me want to stop reading. Which is ironic because ACOTAR got me back into reading and I enjoyed the series thoroughly but ToG was an uphill battle to get through. I was pleased with it overall though, but idk if I would recommend ToG to friends tbh

I will say this until the day I pass but there is too much Aedion and Lysandra for part 1

It will be interesting to see if her writing has changed a bit for her new upcoming books verses some of her older books

Once again you are articulating exactly what I felt in this series. That being said I do like ACOTAR and Crescent City is my Roman Empire. I’m often left confused when people fall over themselves and call CC boring. But as you said, could be a “me” thing haha

I wanted this book to be 500 pages longer. I want every mundane detail and conversation.

All of KoA has so much filler and repetition. I enjoyed parts of it and certain characters (not Aelin lol) but most of the time I was begging for it to end…and it just wouldn’t. 😂

IMHO :
I love great prose but not more than I love the emotional impact of strong bonds between characters being threatened, deepened, changed, tortured, etc. no one does that better than SJM. If that doesn’t move you then I’m sorry you’re missing out.

I’ll be forever upset at the people who convinced you to read throne of glass instead of ACOTAR

I definitely feel like most of this series could isn't been cut in half of they took out all the fluff. Also, I wish she'd learn how to use synonyms instead of using the same words a lot.

KoA 100% could have cut out 1/4th of it and still had the impact it had. But I ate the series up and was totally okay with lingering in the story with all the bloat.

sjm imo is not great in creating strong impactful dialogs. i agree that aside from aelin, there are some good moments. but there is one particular scene that made me SO angry -cant share it until you're done with the book

I also had to come to terms with that Sarah J Mass writing is not for me. The stunted sentence structure did a disservice to the plot, and really made it a slog for me to get through

I'm not quite finished with KOA I've got ~200 pages left. I have absolutely loved parts of KOA, I've been livid, I've sobbed, I've been absolutely tickled and giggling like a schoolgirl.
However, the first 300 pages pissed me off so bad. Did we need 300 pages of check ins and updates? I was so irritateddddd. I absolutely agree with your thoughts on the pacing and honesty the writing. There are a few specific things I like about her writing but they are outnumbered by the things that irritate and distract me, specifically the repetition of a few specific words/phrases. It drives me absolutely bonkers and for whatever criminal reason it persists across multiple series. I really enjoy her storytelling, world building and her character development/the way she weaves characters together, but the writing she uses to do that....not my favorite.
