@an.i.ma.tion: A clip from "The Elevator" (1991), by Kōji Yamamura. A boy rushes out one morning with his school satchel on his back and steps into his apartment elevator like any other day. It doesn't stop. It falls and falls, past every floor, until the doors finally open onto a world buried under the earth. Yamamura renders the descent in soft pencil and watercolor, the walls of the shaft dissolving into geology, so that an ordinary commute becomes a passage into somewhere older and stranger. Kōji Yamamura was born in Nagoya in 1964 and made his first animated film at thirteen. Through the late 1980s and early 1990s he worked largely in children's animation, developing the hand-drawn, tactile approach that would later define him. His 2002 film "Mt. Head" won the Grand Prix at Annecy and earned an Academy Award nomination, and he went on to make "Franz Kafka's A Country Doctor" and "Muybridge's Strings."
