It’s the moms. Even worse, the sahm’s. They feed into the social media comparison game. Notice how kids ask mom when they want something, but dad when they need something. Calling a spade a spade.

Dance and sports are ridiculous. Not only do parents pay a lot for dance, they have to pay 40 dollars per ticket for the recital, and not to mention the costumes.

I never spent so much on my teenage boy until he hit 16. Driver’s ed/ car/ insurance and on top of that SAT prep/ college visits. Around the corner is college tuition 🤯

Also it feels like every holiday is slowly turning into a mini Christmas 😅 there’s baskets for every holiday, we used to be so happy with a box of chocolate for Valentine’s Day and free candy on Halloween night lol

I feel like a very small percentage of people can contemplate having birthday parties at large venues , traveling around the world , private school and designer clothes for their children . I feel like 90% of households are trying to keep their kids fed , clothed and the lights on right now. Never mind the medical bills .

I could not afford kids. Could not afford to get married. Society does not want to hear that. Do what is best for you, and you only- it is financial literacy.

My husband and I are mid thirties with no kids and have been married for 10 years. We are Christians and want to have a child, but the cost to raise a child is astronomically more than our parents is making us think more. I’m so torn.

Don’t get me started on a kids birthday party…. These places want $500+ for Chuck-E-Cheese type places birthday “packages” which include adults?!?! Why are the parents being counted when they’re only there to supervise their individual child?

The cost for activities and sports! 😩 We don’t have rec/city leagues for anything, so if my kids want to play something, it’s travel leagues. (And at our large high school, if you haven’t played travel ball with that level of training and skill, you don’t make the team. Even JV is incredibly competitive.😟)

I never understand the birthday parties. when I was a kid, my party was at McDonalds. we stacked boxes of chicken mcnuggets to see how high we could get them. that was the literal game. and I loved it. why do they have to be so fancy?

I believe ( even if you can afford it) children need to learn how to stand on their own 2 feet. Otherwise there will never be responsible. They will also lack joy when they achieve things themselves. I actually think giving your kids everything is a form of abuse

We went school clothes shopping recently and my daughter wanted to go to the mall. She got a pair of sweats, a pair of leggings and a pair of shorts.. for those three things it was $100. 🫠

I don’t envy you. I have friends from that area. My Gen X has done a terrible job of spoiling kids. Here’s how we handled it. I’d give the kids budgets at Christmas, & a back to school budget. Encourage them to be active in school sports or clubs. Make them get jobs at 16 & they pay for their gas. When one of your teens says, “Kate is going to 30A for 3 weeks,” you reply, “Good for them!” The next year she’ll say, I’m going this concert, this event & here with Kate. Fun, glad u have your job money & asked for time off! Mom, Kate’s family does all kinds of fun things. “I’m glad she’s your friend!” She’ll figure out Kate is spoiled, but she still loves her. They can all be friends while you still lay the values. Stick with what you want to.
