@travismayo: John Gottman put 130 newlywed couples in an apartment lab with cameras for 24 hours and counted the small moments nobody notices. One partner says look at that bird. It is not about the bird, it is a request for attention, and Gottman called these bids. Six years later the couples still married had turned toward those bids 86 percent of the time. The couples who divorced, 33 percent. Anthropologist Bronisław Malinowski named this kind of talk phatic communion back in 1923. The words are the carrier.
