His grandmother initially insisted he was a "good boy" who must have been under the influence, and indeed he had been drinking heavily earlier that evening, first clashing with strangers during a grocery trip and later becoming aggressive at a hardware store and a bar. But interviews with Maria, a friend named William, a pastor, and eventually Yvette's cousin Tonya revealed that substances were only part of the story: Nicholas carried deep, long-standing resentment toward his mother rooted in a troubled and abusive childhood, had a reputation for menace, and had reportedly been the subject of fears that he might one day take her life. The investigation also uncovered a possible financial motive, as Yvette's life insurance, inheritance, and property had been arranged to pass to Nicholas, and those accounts were emptied unusually quickly after her death. A key detail sealed the prosecution's case for premeditation: during the emergency call, Nicholas deliberately took the phone from his grandmother, misled the dispatcher, and returned to the assault.
