I feel like all of this came naturally to me as a parent (except maybe the transactional one. I would say for example “clean up your toys and then we will go to the park”) I only have one child and he was super well behaved so maybe I’m lucky. Or maybe he was well behaved because I treated him like a person? He is 23 now and we are BFFs

Have you ever heard of Maria Montessori? I keep thinking about her when I listen to your videos, especially the way she viewed children with so much dignity and respect. My 6 year old also just started Suzuki violin and I’ve been loving learning about his philosophy. One of my favorite quotes of his is “I play with children so that I can learn from them.” I’m so curious what you think of both!

trying to heal myself, how do I avoid traumatizing them with my own mess? I'm not able to show up how I want

People of all kinds are invested in hierarchy. Sure, everyone wants a reasonable amount of control over their lives but it's damaging to the collective when our self esteem hinges on the subjugation of others.

The amount of times I’ve been getting screamed at and disrespected only to then react and be told I’m being disrespectful and that if I want to be treated with respect then I need to earn it… every time I wanted to ask them what they’ve done to earn it from me but that would’ve got me literally beat so I’d usually just say nothing

I really appreciate you talking about childism! 💛 i really think it's the missing piece from a lot of parenting content, acknowledging the inherent power imbalance in the parenting relationship and acknowledging that parenting is a relationship

IMO Treating a child like a person (while needing to be done got its own sake) has a personal benefit: reactive responses can transform into well-rounded, well-suited problem-solving, far more successfully easing the (legitimate) trouble/bad habits/etc. (Like I said, this is a carrot for parents to try if they don’t think this way lol. It’s for the kids sake ultimately.)

The reason my mom and I were so close in adulthood is because she ALWAYS treated me as a person first and foremost. Never like some child whose thoughts and opinions didn’t matter.

I’ve never understood the whole getting upset over “why”. That’s how I learn…so I know when my children ask why, they are asking for a reason. Even if it’s annoying to me or questioning my plans when they can’t do what they want - I break it down so they learn time management. Especially for my oldest kiddo. I’m only one person and as much as I would love to be the fun mom and hang out, I have to take care of priorities first. He just started working and i can see the light bulb going off in his head now lol all of the things he didn’t understand or brushed off before, it’s all clicking

Discuss your interest and their interest. Explore solutions. I feel like this came out in research in like the 70s or 80s from Harvard and I followed it relentlessly. And my parents taught me how to do it in all situations. It’s just so much easier to treat your children like humans that you unconditionally respect.

My boys are far apart in age, and this is the same type of thinking I use when they butt heads. “Treat him/Talk to him like you would your friends.” It’s very easy for them to recognize dichotomy between the two.

Parenting is the only class of behavior that not only is it acceptable that you’re a bully, but it’s actually seen as a right of passage and an entitlement as a parent. You don’t get to talk to or treat anybody else in your social sphere like this and have them stay in your life, but boy do you get to be a piece of you know what to your kid, and they still have to love you because they’re your kid.
