@keds_economist: Is the #economy good right now? Is it strong? Weak? I talk about consumer sentiment and make the case that the #conservative economic policy regime is coming to an end.
I want an apology from everyone who said Trump would be better for the economy.

unemployment as its measured and reported is low, but functional unemployment (people who aren't making enough or working enough hours to be functionally employed) is 24.9%... that's insanely high

“Trickle down” proves itself a failure over and over again, but it’s the only economic policy that Republicans have. That $15 trillion could have been used much more productively instead of sitting around in the coffers of the 0.1%. We have this cultural idea that tax money is wasteful and inefficient, instead of understanding that taxes fund what we’re trying to collectively accomplish. Taxes are about pooling resources to accomplish big things that the private sector won’t do. They are an investment in the capacity of a society.

And to top it off, they keep brow-beating us about how AI is going to accelerate this level of inequality into overdrive.

I don’t care what people say, real inflation is way higher than what the report says. I need a colonoscopy, it’s $6200!!!

Do you think that the death of the boomers will push the US away from conservative economic policies in significant ways?

Imagine the US economy like a barrel of apples most of our leaders would say yah there is probably a few bad apples in there, but hell, most of those apples are the best apples in the world but no one every opens the barrel to look at the condition of these apples but rather they throw a nice oak stain on the barrel and say what a nice barrel it must hold the best apples in the world but if anyone every opens the barrel they will find fat white worms eating the last of the rotten pulp of what used to be our apples 🍎

Inflation RATE is not as relevant. The prices ratcheted up. It doesn’t matter much if the rate slows. They’ve still gone way up in relation to income

I can only speak from my personal experience. All costs are up. Our mortgage is $3300 (went up $500 a month due to taxes). Our student loans are cumulatively $2500/month and will continue to go up due to the interest first payment structure. My husband has been a pharmacist for 14 years and earns less than when he did when he first started and is working way more hours. We have already cut back most non-essentials.

A living wage in North Dakota (my personal benchmark for a low cost place to live, using MIT Living Wage project as a source) is $44k/yr. More than $20/hr! Yet median household income there (per FRED/Census) is just $88k/yr, and ND has relatively high household incomes. That is terrible. Wealth and income inequality is well past the point that triggered violent revolutions historically. Tax the rich.
