Slugs! Should we love them or hate them? Although they can be a nuisance in the garden, they play an essential role in our ecosystems: they build healthy soils by recycling dead plant matter and they feed other wildlife such as hedgehogs and toads. In fact, only around 20% of slug species in the UK eat living plants! It can be tempting at times to go on a slug killing rampage, reaching for the slug pellets, beer traps and nematodes. In order not to disturb the balance and biodiversity in the garden, it is worth considering a more passive approach to slug management. The trouble is, if we start playing “gastrogod” by killing slugs ourselves it could damage population numbers to the extent that it impacts on soil health & other wildlife who are dependent on them for food. Slug treatments are also non-discriminatory: they will affect all slug species including the innocent folk who were merely munching on a couple of dead leaves and never touched a lettuce! 🌱 Tip 1: in order to minimise slug damage in your garden, try to encourage predators into your garden by providing them with a welcoming home: ponds, log piles and slightly overgrown areas all provide habitat for nature’s answer to the slug police. 🌱 Tip 2: try sowing seeds into pots & waiting until you have nice big healthy plants before planting them in the ground. Slugs love tender new growth so seedlings are always a tempting snack. Larger more established plants are also more likely to survive a slug attack. #slugs #gyo #growyourown #growyourownfood #homestead #smallholding #garden #lovegardening #kitchengarden #veggarden #plants #igrewthis #ediblegarden #gardendesign
