I got my associates degree in computer science and that’s when I found out it wasn’t for me

It’s a glorified math degree

As a computer engineer, I think it’s all college curriculums as a whole and not just the major! I feel like I only learned technical skills through internships/on the job

This. You will be asked in job interviews to write code samples to solve word problems and you better know what a hash table is. You will not be asked to prove a theorem or anything you learned in Calc 3.

Definitely would major in a specific niche like information technology, Software Engineering, Digital Forensics etc etc then pair it with CS as minor !

It's a degree, it's not meant to teach you what jobs are using. It's meant to teach you about the field and theory behind computing. It's on you to develop the skills needed and be competitive to recruiters. If you want to learn applied CS you should've studied SWE/CE.

I changed to data analytics and I’m much happier. Higher ed needs to either update curriculums to be more inclusive and less broad or offer more specialized degrees

If you’re not competitive/high achieving then no. Competitive fields in math science or technology will always be hard. I don’t understand this take where yall expect everything to be easy and handed to you. If you can’t compete, study something else. If you’re actually high achieving you’ll do just fine. 200k new grad SWE here. Graduated in spring 2026. Did 4 swe internships in tech (paid anywhere from $50-$60/hr as an intern)

someone in the field for 15-20 years, yes the cs degree makes a huge difference in ur understanding of how specifically computers (not information technology tools like google search) can be used to accomplish various tasks (software engineering, data analytics, research, etc) - it is a very versatile degree and very respected in industry/academia.

My cs program is teaching me cloud aws, ai, modern tools, GitHub, I’m a major in cs and a minor in game development. Do research on your colleges programs.

Im EE and CE with minor in cs. EE teaches me a lot more on the electrical aspects and power CE goes over hardware ai ml and cloud and even teaches how to code with ai, and CS helps me still learn data structures and algorithms at my school the classes damn near over lap and cs minor covers some electives so if feasible I recommend all three because youll take the same classes regardless
