Personally I have never really understood the appeal of “taste” as a hierarchical thing, though I agree it exists in the world in that way and is reinforced / policed in a variety of ways. I always want to frame taste as being about having / cultivating a *personal* perspective — doing the work to understand what you like / don’t like, what your “voice” is etc.
