@lilmaverick3: AI and online classes. #ai #onlineclass #education Cheating, academic dishonesty in higher education. The mass dumbing down of America and degraded degrees. Parents failing the young, coddled students who cannot handle real work or consequences, lack of adulting skills, faculty labor crisis, systemic collapse of authenticity.

Easy fix: require all work to be hand written. That way at least they're doing something that has been shown to educate a human brain. Easier fix: let it go. This country doesn't solve a problem until it becomes a crisis, so why not let it get worse so we can finally address the problem?

I just graduated with my BSW (midlife career change lol) and SO MANY STUDENTS in my online courses would post virtually the same incorrect response to discussion prompts. I got curious and started putting the prompts into ChatGPT to find that they were doing literal copy-pastes. Not even changing enough to differentiate from each other?! And the answers were often WRONG. My smartass started using my discussion responses to ask them about their posts and how they came to those conclusions and it was always crickets. And these are SOCIAL WORKERS 🙃😭😭

I want to return to how our school handled it 5 years ago. They can learn online but come in for testing at a physical testing center. We even made deals with other schools to use their testing centers if the student was local.

First, let me say I am not a professor of a subject that requires essays. While in my first several years I had tests that had essays, fill in the blank, etc.. I don’t do that anymore. My Chemistry 101 professor taught me that multiple-choice test can be way harder than traditional test when a professor creates distractions based on common mistakes students make in their calculations. He also allowed students to bring in one sheet front and back of anything they would help them for the test. Now I don’t teach chemistry 101, but I have only multiple-choice test now. Everything is open book, open Internet, open whatever they want to use. But if they’re looking up all the questions, they won’t have enough time to complete the test. I set up my test that you get about half to 3/4 of the time vs the number of questions. And while people still do really well you can’t just wing it because there’s not enough time to look up everything. Now I’m not saying this is the only or best answer but it’s the one I’ve come up with.

My department just voted to eliminate most of our online US surveys for this reason. We have to offer a few for students enrolled in fully online degrees, but that’s it. Everybody else has to take the in-person survey classes, which are required for all majors in Texas. No more sitting in their dorm rooms and cheating their way through. So far, the administration is allowing us and a couple other departments to do this. But I recognize that it’s an unusual situation. We’re an M1 state univ in a remote rural area, which means that few departments could hire adjuncts, even if we wanted to.

I teach a 5/5 online. But I won’t agree to teach asynchronously. They have to do actual Zoom classes where I make them interact and the grade is heavily weighted toward participating (I spend a TON of time documenting it). I give zeros when it’s obviously AI. I refer to conduct when they repeat offend. I’ve never had a denial yet. But it takes 3x as long to find the artifacts than to grade. I do make a living wage (90k). I am working myself to the bone managing it. But I don’t want to do this unless I’m still at least trying to actually teach. I am so scared for the future. I teach future social workers. How many will these cheaters let die because they never learned the knowledge they need to build the skills?

I am running on fumes, and I have decided to not kill myself over it because it's way bigger than I am. I have had 3 teaching jobs for the last 20 yrs, I have tenure, and I will never make a 3 figure income.

Wait stop. You lost me at tenured faculty make 6 figures. 😆. I’m tenured at a research one and make nowhere near that! Ok, but your points are still valid.

At our community college we have secured computers in a testing center for certification. We should use something like that. “You’re on line but every four weeks or so you have to take a test at the college in these secured locations.” If that is in play and those test are heavily weighted- the rest of the course is preparation. So if they are using AI, they won’t pass.

I honestly care too much which is why when I graduated with my Master’s in Education in Online Learning and technology I knew I would never be able to put a dent in these systemic issues and haven’t utilized my degree.

Lots of us tenured faculty do not make six figures, even after a couple decades. I know we make more than adjuncts and lecturers but we’re not all the same.

It’s sounding a lot like moral injury. Hospital staff who worked through the pandemic has talked a lot about that since 2020. The system MUST support you. When they don’t, good people quit. It’s happening in healthcare like wild. 😭

I guess I dont understand why proctored exams aren't the solution? I'm sure people who have amazing tech skills could find some way around it, but the majority would need to do it properly, and then its no extra work for the professor. Why are they not the solution?

So then is the AI generated slop graded as a failure? And you’re saying that that’s what professors can’t do because you get backlash from everybody. So then what if you grade the AI generated slop a C. And you tell your students that that’s how assignments will be graded. And I know it’s not that simple. Guess what I’m responding to is that your description of what’s going on is actually identifying that the entire field has changed in your crucial person now in this changing field. I think you do have to care. But in order to do so without burning out you have to find a way through. You’re gonna have to create new procedures in guardrails not only for yourself but also for the students. New expectations. I’m also wondering if you’ve actually talked to students or two classes in general about this particular issue (which I’m sure you have actually) but what they think about it. Because the other thing that happens as students that are really trying to do well are going to be penalized. And I wonder what they thought of as how to solve these conditions?
