@newstalkfm: 'It is hard to assimilate into a country unless you speak the language.' Should there be a language test for new Irish citizens? Ciara and Shane discuss the topic, on The Hard Shoulder. #ireland #irishtiktok #immigration
English language test sure, but Irish test? The majority of Irish people doesn't speak Irish 😅

Ireland has critical skills shortages and actively brings in doctors, nurses, engineers, IT professionals, finance experts and researchers to support the economy.
These people come legally, work, pay high taxes and contribute for years. Now asking them to wait 8 years for eligibility, plus potentially years for processing, could mean 10+ years before citizenship.
If highly skilled workers start choosing other countries with clearer and faster pathways, Ireland could lose the very talent its businesses, hospitals and economy depend on.
A very disappointing message to people who came here legally, contributed heavily and built their lives here.

Actually, the only people who can apply for Irish citizenship are those who have worked in the country (without having been studying) for at least five years. To get a work visa, you already have to speak English, not to mention that the people who qualify for those visas usually come from highly skilled professions and have an academic background behind them.
The demand for an English test as a requirement to apply for citizenship comes from discrimination. As if the Irish themselves didn’t have a huge history of migration.
Go to your own museum, EPIC, and learn your own history.
